Bintang Pilsener Review by Curt

Last month we took a vacation and it was a much needed surf trip that had to happen.  This year we ventured to the island of Bali, Indonesia in SE Asia.  What an incredible trip, people, culture, views, and of course the surf.  Having arrived in the beginning of July, we got there 5 days before a nice big swell came in and lit up Padang Padang 10-12 feet, an incredible day since that wave does not go off that often.

While in Bali, we drank a lot of beer, mainly Bintang, they call it a pilsner but it’s more a lager than anything.  Not the best beer out there, but when it’s humid and hot and you have a cold brew after a day of surfing and sun, it really cannot be beat.  Bintangs come in two sizes, large Bintang (622ml or 22oz.) and small Bintang (12 oz.).  We always opted for the large Bintang which ran us (depending on where we were in Bali) $2-3 usd.  not a bad price compared to other countries including the US.

So I guess you may want to know how it tastes.  It’s an ok beer, that can be drunken in large quantities, not a firm head, bitter taste, semi bitter smell, golden in color and a lingering after taste.  Not much to talk about here, but if you find yourself in Indo, you will become a fan of it, because there is not much to choose from, but also because the beer is cold (not much else is served really cold there) and the memories of your trip and watching the sunset after a fun day of exploring and relishing the taste of a cold beverage from another part of the world.

Enjoy it, I will always love Bintang.
